The Adelaide Diocese, formed in 1847, is a city diocese encompassing the Adelaide Hills, beachside suburbs, the spreading northern outer suburbs, market gardens, and Barossa Valley with its vines and wine industry. The Dioceses of Adelaide, Willochra and The Murray form the Province of South Australia.

Mothers' Union began in Adelaide in 1875. At a meeting convened by Mrs Dorothy Harmer, young wife of the newly appointed Bishop, Mrs Harmer announced that Lady Victoria Buxton, wife of the new Governor of South Australia and friend of Mary Sumner, had agreed to serve as their first President.

Today we have about 262 financial members in 17 parish branches (2018), a Diocesan branch, and a number of lone members.

Lady Day is always a day of celebration in St Peter's Cathedral with our Patron, the Governor's wife attending and lunch and a Speaker to follow.

The Wave of Prayer, Mary Sumner Day and a Quiet day are observed. Prayer is important in the lives of our members. Our Chaplain has written a prayer for mothers in prison and their children, which many members pray daily. Donated toiletries for new prisoners are distributed by "Seeds of Affinity."

The Work of AMUA Adelaide

Our 2015/2016 Projects are:
Supporting single mothers and their dependent children through St John's Youth Services, and Church and Community Mobilisation Training in Tanzania.
Two film mornings raise money for these projects. Branches and individuals raise money for these projects and other worthy causes that MU Australia promotes.

Each Monday morning, two members spend time on a rostered basis at Helen Mayo House, a live-in facility for mothers suffering from peri natal depression. They look after babies and toddlers while mothers have appointments or have time-out. Some members crochet or knit rugs for the mothers.

Contact is made each year with ordinands in training, and a monetary gift and MU service book given to each new deacon.

Mothers' Union magazines are packaged and mailed by Bedford Phoenix, an organization employing staff with disabilities. The Murray Mothers' Union has recently joined with us in this. The costs of the magazines and mail-outs to the clergy of Adelaide, The Murray and Willochra is borne by a memorial fund.

"Sharing Christ's love by encouraging, strengthening, and supporting marriage and family life."
